Property/Evidence Standards & Best Practices

The Asheville Police Department experienced a terrible incident with its property and evidence function in 2011, when it was discovered that the evidence manager had been stealing controlled substances from the evidence room. Despite the major issue, it did not affect their accreditation status. In this session, what happened will be carefully reviewed, in conjunction with CALEA standards, and the best practices that agencies should consider; and controls that can prevent a similar incident from happening at other agencies.

Hannah has been the Accreditation Manager for the Asheville Police department for eight years, where she has managed two successful reaccreditation cycles. Prior to her time as an Accreditation Manager, she worked in Communications for both the police department and UNC system. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from UNC Asheville, and a Master's in Project Management from Western Carolina University.
